Check these things before calling an electrician for residential electrical needs

The electrical system is one of the essential parts of a house. A trained electrician is the very first requirement for residential electrical needs. Before calling an electrician you should self-inspect the house for any issues, sometimes there is a fused bulb. However, if there is any problem, you should call an electrician. Never risk your and your family’s safety, save the repair work for a professional.

Here, I am sharing some electrician tips that you should consider before calling an electrician:

Check the Circuit Breaker

Old houses have a fuse box; you should look for a fuse that is discolored. The fuse may be melted in some areas. If you are having a problem with kitchen lights, look for the fuse labeled as “kitchen.” If the fuse is burnt out or has black spots in some areas, call an electrician.

New houses have easier to check the circuit breaker. You just have to open the door on the breaker and flip the switch to the “on” position.

Check if you are often losing the power to a specific area of the house, for example, kitchen or bathroom. Check if you run the iron same time as you run the vacuum or you have added a new appliance that is adding load to the circuit.

Check for Overlamping

Sometimes the electrical problems are limited to one light fixture, check that fixture. Most often than not, the problem is with bulbs. Before calling an electrician check if the bulb is burned out. Many times people forget to check. If the problem persists, the reason could be overlamping, which means the bulb gets higher wattage than it can handle. Don’t install a hundred-watt bulb in a lamp that can only handle fifty watts.

Overlamping can melt the socket, which creates a risk of fire. Overlamping damages the wires of the fixture; it is better to call an electrician to deal with the issue.

Not all electricians are equally trained; there are different levels of training- Journeyman and Master Electrician. A master electrician has a higher skill level in:

· Project Management

· Electrical installations

· Codes

· Electrical systems

· Safety regulations

· Permits

A journeyman can do the work but might not work out the details like codes. Both journeyman and master electrician are capable of doing minor repairs. However, if you want to reconfigure the electrical system, you better hire a master electrician.

Keep an Eye on These Problems

By keeping an eye on these problems, you can recognize the signs of a potential electrical problem:

· Frequently needing to reset a beaker means you need to call a trained electrician to see the problem.

· Dimming or flickering of lights is not a usual phenomenon; you should call an electrician.

· An unidentified burning smell is a reason of worry; it’s time to call an electrician when there is a continuous burning smell in your house.

· Discolored switches or outlets are not normal. An electrician can look into the matter and offer you adequate solutions for the same.

· Usage of a lot of extension cords is not healthy for your home. Avoid putting too much pressure on one outlet. With continuous usage, an extension cord can deteriorate and can create an electric shock or fire hazard.

Conclusion

To ensure the safety of your home, it is essential to inspect your house of any loose wires or discolored outlets. The electrician tips can help you in avoiding dangerous hazards.
